Health, Safety and Environment
At Vital Rail we are proud of our safety achievements, and are committed to continuously improving our safety performance. We have clearly defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Health and Safety which are aligned with UK rail industry standards; these are monitored, reported on and reviewed with senior management on a monthly basis.
KPIs include non-lost time injury rate, lost time injury rate, RIDDOR, Fatality Weighted Index (FWI), near-miss reporting and accident frequency rates with challenging targets set for each element.
All Vital staff receive health and safety training relevant to the work they are to undertake, and all managers have their health and safety responsibilities clearly defined. A Health and Safety Handbook has been produced and issued to all operatives and is also available at all client sites. Training requirements are regularly reviewed with training plans developed to maintain a high level of competence and understanding.
Vital Rail can produce health and safety plans, risk assessments, method statements and RIMINI plans for every work scenario.
We also take pride in our environmental responsibility and as such have developed an Aspects and Impacts Register which monitors our performance as we strive for continuous improvement.
In-house Environmental Awareness briefings are conducted to increase staff understanding, knowledge and responsibility.
Continued improvement in all aspects of Health, Safety and the Environment is being achieved by creating a culture of ‘safety first’, and the concept that everyone owns health and safety. This includes using near-miss reporting as a frontline tool in the fight against accident prevention.
